Antiquity has provided a standard by which all subsequent periods have tended to be judged. The Jenkins Venus was thought during the neoclassical period to be the embodiment of love and beauty, so fundamental to contemporary ideas of art appreciation.

NEW FOR 2010: Exclusive Study Trip to Art Basel

Christie's Education, New York is delighted to offer an exclusive study trip to Zurich and Basel, Switzerland. This exceptionally well-curated trip is organized to coincide with Art Basel, considered a must-see event for those with an interest in the international contemporary art scene.

The fair will provide the starting point for an in-depth look at modern and contemporary art. Participants will not only attend the opening of Art Basel but will also have the opportunity to share compelling insights with gallerists in their booths. Visits to private collections and artists' studios, as well as numerous world-class museums and galleries, will provide for a unique, hands-on learning experience.

Several dinners and lunches will be spent in the company of art professionals whose observations about the art world will provide for an enlightening set of discussions. A Christie's Education faculty member, whose contemporary art scholarship is frequently seen in Art in America, will accompany this 6-day/5-night excursion. Boutique hotel accommodations, transportation in Switzerland and most meals are included.

Space is limited to 15 participants to ensure a private, behind-the-scenes experience.

Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry

Christie's Education and Christie's Jewelry Department are pleased to announce the return of our highly popular annual course, Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry.

This intensive master class will approach 19th and 20th century jewelry from a variety of angles. The first two days will consist of morning lectures and afternoon field studies. Lecture topics will range from the social significance of jewelry to the history of major houses such as Tiffany & Co., and an authority on precious stones will lecture from a connoisseur’s point of view. Field trips will include a private curator-led tour of American jewelry at the Metropolitan Museum’s newly renovated American wing, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Van Cleef & Arpels workshop and archives. On the morning of the third day, there will be a walkthrough of the Christie’s sale with a Christie’s specialist.

The course Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry is now full, and we are not taking any more registration forms at this time. If you would like to be added to our waitlist, please email christieseducation@christies.edu; if a space becomes available on the course, we will contact you. This course is offered annually, and we hope you will be able to join us next year.

An Introduction to Wine: Part II

After over 25 years of success in London, the Christie's Wine Course has come to New York! Christie's Education and NYWinesChristie's are pleased to present a series of five evening sessions that will focus on either a wine producing region or a wine type. The intent of these classes is to provide substantive information in an accessible format. While the course requires no prerequisite, it will be of an informative nature rather than a purely hedonistic one. Topics to be covered include the Rhône, Germany, Australia, Spain and Dessert Wine. The sessions will be organized classroom style, with a flight of six to eight wines to illustrate each region or theme. Charles Curtis, Master of Wine and Vice President, Head of North American Wine Sales at Christie's, will lead the sessions, which include a lecture followed by a tasting of appropriate wines. Charles became the 22nd Master of Wine in the United States in 2004, and has garnered a number of honors, including the prestigious "Bourse André Crispin” in 2002, presented by the Commanderie de Bordeaux aux Etats-Unis.
