Navigating the New York Art Fairs

Join Christie’s Education, New York on an intimate and exclusive course coinciding with The Armory Show in New York, America’s leading art fair. Students will hear lectures about trends in contemporary art, learn about the market for contemporary art, and hear about the history and financials of the production of fairs. The students will take guided tours of the Armory Contemporary, the Armory Modern as well as The ART SHOW 2012, Volta and The Independent.

Global Contemporary Art: Focus on China

Chinese Contemporary Art went from relative obscurity to center of the international stage in the space of a decade. Today major Chinese artists have taken their place as world-class art stars. This course will serve as a valuable encapsulation of this phenomenon. Lectures will address Chinese art from the 1970s through the present. Major internationally known Chinese artists including Cai Guo-Qiang, Huang Yong Ping, Xu Bing, Gu Wenda and Zhang Huan will be discussed from an historical as well as a market perspective by leading experts in the field. The class will include a private sale walkthrough of the contemporary Chinese art on preview at Christie’s Rockefeller Center, with a Christie’s specialist. This course inaugurates a new series of courses on global contemporary art at Christie's Education.

Special Topics in 19th and 20th Century Jewelry

Christie’s Education is pleased to announce the return of our highly popular annual jewelry course. This intensive master class will approach 19th and 20th century jewelry from both market and connoisseurship perspectives. An introduction to the gem market and a lecture on appraising antique and estate jewelry will be given by internationally known authorities. Learn about Elizabeth Taylor’s spectacular jewelry collection and the landmark Christie’s sale. Field studies include a private visit to the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to see collection highlights including important Castellani-Guiliano holdings and a workshop tour. There will be a walkthrough of the Christie’s spring jewelry sale with a Christie’s specialist. Ground transportation and one lunch will be provided.

Engaging With Contemporary Art

This exciting two-day course will take you through the ins and outs of today's contemporary art world. Contemporary art is one of the most intriguing and creatively diverse areas of art. It rewards study: the more you see, the more you can recognize stylistic tendencies and identify your own preferences. Art market specialists, scholars and art dealers will present lectures and guide field studies. Field trips will include a gallery crawl, a private tour of Cindy Sherman at the Museum of Modern Art, and more. This course aims to provide a critical and theoretical framework in order to better understand the status of the image in contemporary art and culture.

Collecting Today

In this ever-expanding art world, how does one go about starting a collection? What are the legal issues to be aware of when buying and selling art? How can one assess the value of a work of art when buying, selling or insuring it? And what are the conservation and framing issues that should be considered? This course will examine the aesthetic, financial, and legal decisions that are necessary to consider in both starting and building a collection. Lectures will cover issues of art as an asset class, framing the contemporary, conservation and legal issues, and will provide the novice and experienced collector with fundamental knowledge about collecting in today’s contemporary market.

The New York Art World: A Contemporary Art Summer School

Our Contemporary Art Summer School is an intensive week-long program designed to take you behind-the-scenes of the contemporary art world in New York City. This unique course will cover the city from a tour of Chelsea galleries and the High Line to an insider’s look at the auction house.  The course will include trips to a private collection, artist studio and more.

Lectures on contemporary art by Christie's Education faculty will demystify new strategies for artists and viewers, while lectures on art business will address the complex network of dependencies that constitute the art world, the various steps that lead to an art work being sold at auctions, and art as an asset class; more specifically why and how art can be understood as one among other investment options.

Course fee: $2,000
