Cultural Capitals

Over six weeks this innovative course will explore six great cultural capitals at times when they were particularly exciting during the early modern period (1860-1940):

Paris
Brussels
Vienna
London
Berlin
New York

Using a wide range of visual and sound materials, the lectures will attempt to recreate, as far as possible, what it would be like to experience these times and places first-hand. They will deal with every aspect of high and low culture from theatre, opera and art exhibitions to eating, shopping and popular entertainment.
