Hong Kong Short Course

Christie’s Education is offering a three-day art market course in Hong Kong which will introduce you to the latest research on the international art market. This course is suitable for anyone wishing to become involved or already part of this growing and fascinating trade.

The course will present an overview of the art market in all its forms from different academic and market angles. You will gain an understanding of art, its market and how it is affected by the wider economy. The course will also highlight the similarities and unique differences between the art trade and other businesses.

Taught by leading art market expert James Goodwin, the course will also feature guest lecturers from numerous aspects of the art world, including welcoming remarks by Francois Curiel, President of Christie's Asia. Participants will receive complimentary copies of Christie's Hong Kong Autumn 2010 catalogues, and be invited to a program of exclusive events, including cocktails, auctions, and visits. At the end of the course, students will be provided with a letter of attendance.

Day 1

Friday 26th November, 10:00 – 16:30 The Art Market 10.00 – 12.30

This session will discuss how the economic and social influences, cycles and fashions, values and prices, collectors and investors are filtered by the market’s unique operating mechanism now being transformed by technology. It will show how the art market has retained many formative characteristics common to all countries and times.

12.30 Break 14.00 – 16.30

This session will examine the viewpoints of sellers, buyers and influential bystanders. It will look at the external factors influencing price and the institutional elements which create different types of value. This will include international pricing, the role of museums, collector psychology, difficulties of valuation, art investment, and intrinsic value based on academic theory and practical experience.

The second part of the session will outline valuation criteria including factors such as materials used, quality, artistic merit, condition, subject matter, size, authenticity, attribution, artist reputation, historical importance, familiarity, provenance, complementary taste and fashion.

Day 2

Saturday 27th November, 10:00 – 16:30 The Art Business 10.00 – 12.30

This session’s lectures will show how the art market operates in both the primary and secondary sectors. This will include the rules governing these sectors, dealer motivation and image, customer relationships and premises, buying and pricing methods, and scholarship and museum exhibitions. It will also look at the historical development of art fairs, their recent trends, geographic location, prices and displays. Finally, it will outline the different types of auction, pricing, terminology, and conflicts of interest.

12.30 Break 14.00 – 16.30

This session will look into the history and types of corporate collections, influential collections, reasons for collecting, fashions in collecting, collections management, private museums and their crossovers with the public sector. It will also look at museum donations, funding, building, display, (de)accessioning, exhibitions, and scholarship against a backdrop of cultural tourism, law, and ethics.

Day 3

Sunday 28th November, 10:00 – 16:30 Art Management 10.00 – 12.30

This session will explain how international trade defines art and how the market is regulated by national and international treaties. It will also look at laws which shape the market such as the artist-gallery relationship, rules governing auctions and those upholding museum standards and insurance rights. It will also explore moral rights, conventions, copyright and trademark acts, freedom of criticism and expression, and recreation and fair use. The second part will explore direct and indirect taxation affecting the international art market. In addition to this the arguments for and against Droit de Suite affecting the contemporary and modern art markets will be discussed.

12.30 Break 14.00 – 16.30

This session will outline possible, probable, and preferable futures for the art market. It will introduce a toolkit of what to look for, where to look and why they are important to understanding the art market, including key drivers such as taxation, education and price trends. It will discuss key market players and trading costs. The source of information will be demographics, politics/law, economics, society, technology, culture and the art business itself.

James Goodwin MA, MBA is course leader of the Christie’s Art Business Course in London. He lectures on the art market at Maastricht University, The Netherlands, HEC and EuroMed Management, France, City University and Kingston University, UK. His research and writing has appeared in The Economist, Financial Times and Wall Street Journal Europe and been broadcast on the BBC and CNN. His recent book The International Art Markets – The Essential Guide for Collectors and Investors includes 43 country art market chapters and was published in English in July 2008 and in Chinese in June 2010.
